MDP on Hazardous Waste Management in Industries with reference to Orissa

October 25-26, 2008 held at Hotel Presidency, Bhubaneswar

Introduction

The Industrial growth in India has increased more than 50 fold during the last 60 years which has resulted in enormous amount of waste including hazardous waste and chemicals. Since mineral based industries have come up in a big way in Orissa, the need and urgency to train people in Industries about the safe management and handling of these waste was felt. Thus in order to meet this requirement a two-day MD programme was conducted on Hazardous Waste Management in Industries with reference to Orissa. The programme was organized on 25th & 26th October 2008 at Hotel Presidency, Bhubaneswar.

Overview & Objective of the Programme

During the programme the participants were taught state of the art skills that are applicable worldwide within an “adaptive management” framework. They were also provided with the information and overview of domestic and international environmental practices. They were also provided with the opportunity to meet numerous practitioners.

Dignitaries & Speakers

Former Chairman, State Pollution Control Board, Orissa and former member of Central Pollution Control Board and Ex-Vice Chancellor of Sambalpur University Professor M C Dash was the convener of the MD programme.
The participants for the two-day workshop were trained by the managers from various organizations having rich experience in environmental project planning and execution that included Er Nihar Ranjan Sahoo, Senior Environmental Engineer, State Pollution Control Board, Orissa, Dr D. K. Behera, Senior Environmental Scientist of State Pollution Control Board, Orissa, Dr Malay K. Pradhan, Assistant Director, Directorate of Factories and Boilers, Sambalpur, Dr D K Rout, Environmental Scientist, Regional Officer, Orissa State Pollution Control Board, Er. Simanchal Dash and Sri Anupam Behera both from State Pollution Control Board respectively.  The content of the training included topics like basics of ecology, concepts of environment and environment management, environmental audit, hazardous waste audit & including third party audit, hazardous chemical and their management, industrial safety practices, occupational health issues etc.
