Electrical Engineering

Electrical engineering is the study and application of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism. In simple terms, it is about understanding how electricity works in order to use the knowledge for engineering applications. Electrical engineers defined the twentieth century with technologies that transformed society. They gave us universal electric power, telecommunications, radio, and television. Today, we have access to electronic surveillance, medical imaging, computers, and the internet. Electrical engineers work on a wide range of tasks including designing circuits for smartphones and computers, developing power systems for buildings and cities, connecting society with wireless communication networks and maintaining modern civilization. Department of Electrical Engineering has been established with an intake of 30 seats. The Department offers undergraduate discipline of Electrical Engineering with the thrust areas of the Department being Power Systems, Power Electronics, Electrical Machines, Electrical Drives, High Voltage Engineering, Control systems, Instrumentation, Hybrid Electric Vehicles, and Renewable sources of Energy. The Department of Electrical Engineering of IIMT has been at the forefront of technological advancement at the vision level to deliver exceptional education and research in the field, addressing the evolving needs and challenges of the industry. The Department is adorned with faculty members holding academic excellence from national institutes of repute. The faculty members have published a significant number of research articles in reputed journals and published several textbooks/edited books with reputed international publishers. Faculty members have also chaired technical sessions of different national and international meets and have been regular members of various technical committees.The Electrical Engineering laboratory is one of the important labs of the Department as it helps the students across all engineering disciplines to perform the experiments based on basic concepts of electrical science. It is well-equipped with several experimental setups packages for real time experiments.

Prof. S.P. Patra,
Professor of Practice

Prof. S.P. Patra has received his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, UCE Burla (presently V.S.S.U.T., Burla) 1985 and M.Tech in Industrial Power Control & Drives, IGIT Sarang, in the year 2013 and subsequently compelted his Diploma in Management, from IGNOU, in the year 1991.
He has started his career as GET in 1986 at National Aluminium Company Limited and worked in captive Power Plant of 1200 MW installed capacity as Operation engineers in the area of boiler, turbine, generator and balance of plant from 1986 to 2000. Subsequently, he worked in Electrical maintenance department having exposure to all types of equipments in a power plant from 2001 to 2023 and superannuated as General Manager(Electrical). His work experience spanned over Bauxite Mines with capacity of 7.5 MMT and headed Electrical department from 2019 to 2020. He has experience in installation and commissioning of various power plant electrical equipments, conveyor system, distributed control system, PLC and SCADA. He was involved in implementation of ISO 9001, 14001, 50001 and OSHA.
He has Core Competency in statistical problem solving and industrial data analysis. He has taken training on Operation and Maintenance of Thermal Power Station with Simulator training at Power Engineers Training Society from 21.04.1986 to 05.12.1986. He has proficiency in Statistical problem solving and industrial data analysis. He has attended various summer school on Industrial application of microprocessor based instrumentation and control sponsored by ISTE at IGIT Sarang from 30.05.1994 to 11.06.1994.

Dr. Smrutiranjan Nayak,
M. Tech, B.Tech.

Dr. Smrutiranjan Nayak has 15+ years of experience in Teaching, Research and Administration. He obtained B. Tech in Electrical Engineering and M. Tech in Power Electronics and Drives from KIIT (Deemed to be University), Odisha, India in the year 2009 and 2012 respectively. He obtained Ph.D. in Power system Engineering from Siksha 'O' Anusandhan (Deemed to be University), Odisha, India in the year 2022. He has authored or co-authored more than 26 papers in International journals, Indian patents, book chapters, and International conferences. He is a reviewer of many International journals and conferences. He is also Life member of the Institution of Engineers, Solar Energy Society of India, and Indian Society of Lighting Engineers. He is also Associate Editor of Primera Scientific Engineering (PSEN) journal. He has guided several B. Tech. Students. His research interests include Renewable Energy, Power Electronics & Drives, Power Systems, Power Quality, Artificial Intelligence, Smart Grid and Micro Grid technologies.
