MDP on Environmental Management for Sustainable Development

September 6-8, 2008 held at Hotel Presidency, Bhubaneswar

Introduction

Environment is one of the key areas of concern and with the growing industries, problems of environment has grown enormous considering the necessity and challenge of keeping the environment pollution free and simultaneously generating the industrial output. A three-day Management Development Programme on Environmental Management for Sustainable Development was organized on 6-8 September 2008, at Hotel Presidency, Bhubaneswar. The focus of the MDP was on the field based project in the context of the international environmental problems.

Overview & Objective:

The MDP imparted essential knowledge and skills required to manage environment with an emphasis on natural resources such as air, water, soil, plants and animals. The MDP also covered specific topics which included, clarifying the organization’s mission, assessing the project needs, developing the management plans, creating & monitoring plans, leading teams, managing finances, establishing advisory groups, and evaluating projects.During the MDP, Professor Srikant Pattnaik, Chairman of IIMT said, “Orissa is on the threshold of industrial revolution due to the recent policy of the Government of Orissa. On the basis of the resources available the thrust is on Mineral based industries and protection of environment by applying various instruments i.e. Management Systems, Environmental Laws, Environmental Education and People Participation etc. Thus to meet the need of Industries and academics IIMT, Bhubaneswar organized this programme.

Dignitaries & Speakers:

Former Chairman, State Pollution Control Board, Orissa and former member of Central Pollution Control Board Professor M C Dash was the convener of this programme. The participants for the three-day workshop were trained by the managers from various organizations having rich experience in environmental project planning and execution which included former Executive Director of NALCO Er.Sangram K Mishra, Er Nihar Ranjan Sahoo, Senior Environmental Engineer, State Pollution Control Board, Orissa, Dr D. K. Behera and Dr A. K Sarkar both Senior Environmental Scientist of State Pollution Control Board, Orissa. Er. S. K. Guru, Assistant President of HINDALCO, Hirakud and also T. K. Mishra and P. K. Pradhan of HINDALCO, Hirakud.

Participants:

Among the participants for the three-day programme included the corporate, academicians and students.
